These resolutions from The Resolve Project (more specifically, Riley Cran, Two Arms Inc., Jason Hines, and Lydia Nichols, clockwise) especially resonated with me. Me, personally, I'm shooting to draw more, run more, and give back. What are yours?

oatmeal choco-chip almond cookies

I know, it's been quite a while since I posted a recipe! But these were just too tasty not to share... my favorites, I think. I love the texture of oats and the nuttiness of the, well, nuts... I use almonds here, but walnuts or pecans would work, and ooh, wouldn't hazelnuts be amazing? Grab a glass of milk and tuck in!

oatmeal chocolate chip almond cookies

1. Combine 1 cup AP flour with 1 cup rolled oats, and 1/2 teaspoon each baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

2. In another bowl, cream together 1 stick softened, unsalted butter with 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1/4 white sugar. Once it's all fluffy, add 1 beaten egg and 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract.

3. Combine the dry ingredients with the wet and mix until combined, then add 1/2 cup chopped raw almonds and 6 ounces of chocolate chips (or chopped up chocolate bar, as I often do).

4. Preheat oven to 350. Roll the dough into ping-pong sized balls and position about a dozen per baking sheet, then bake on a silpat at 350 degrees for about 10-12 minutes. Nom.

I can't say enough good things about Schoolhouse Electric, so I thought I'd let this little photo tour do the talking. We went back to their lovely, airy space not too long ago, and immediately proceeded to covet everything. There's a subtle mid-century aesthetic, with a touch of industrial old Portland, and all-in-all thoroughly modern and beautifully curated. These are pieces to invest in, meant to last for ages, timeless both in construction and style.

Turns out we have a bunch of huge chestnut trees in our neighborhood, and just learned the important distinction between the edible sort which has a prickly, needley husk (like in the photo), versus the horse chestnut, which has a rubbery husk with fewer, stubbier prickles and is most definitely toxic, poisonous, and thus, not at all delicious. Husks aside though, they look pretty much identical in that lovely, polished wood sort of way. We found these nestled in the leaves in a park just outside of Tokyo, where chestnuts are a much loved and a featured part of the fall harvest.

Thanks again to our neighbors' overabundant CSA delivery, we found ourselves with a huge bag of fresh garbanzo beans, still clinging to their branches. After some head scratching, I figured that simple is best when it comes to new veg. I went with something like edamame with a Mexican twist, and they tasted just like you'd imagine: like a slightly nuttier, more savory edamame, with a mealier texture, and dressed simply in garlic, lemon, and some nice, grassy parsley and olive oil. Very tasty!

Anyway, here's what I did: brown them quickly in a little olive oil, then add a few tablespoons of water, cover and allow them to steam for a few minutes. In the meantime, chop up a handful of flatleaf parsley (I bet cilantro would be lovely!) and finely crush/mince a clove of garlic. When the water has evaporated and the whole shebang has dried out, add a little olive oil, the garlic, parsley, a squeeze of lemon, and salt and pepper to taste.

This is one of those special cookbooks you come across once in a very great while, and I am so glad I did! I have been savoring Tender, reading it cover to cover, vegetable to vegetable, learning how to handle them in the garden and in the kitchen. More than a collection of recipes, this book is a gorgeous, sumptuous (!) wealth of veggie lore, and it couldn't have been written in a friendlier, funnier, more, well, British tone.

Oh, silliness. This little gnome is my first stab at needle felting, and I'm totally hooked. Ha! (I should mention here that needle felting is basically repetitive stabbing at wool with a special sort of hooked needle.) A friend and I took a class over at Collage on Alberta street, and I highly recommend it. Next up, felted woodland creatures!

...of the plant variety, I mean. Meet two of my new favorite plants, currently residing on the front porch: 'Chocolate Ball' sedum and chocolate mint! The former has sweet little yellow flowers and lovely, warm-brown foliage, and the chocolate mint... well. Vibrant green leaves with red-brown stems and veins, and such a pronounced minty flavor, with, honest-to-Betsy, just a hint of chocolate.

While it's lovely in its own right, what really makes my heart go pitter-pat is the Marché St.George cafe in Vancouver! Thanks to our neighbor's overabundant CSA, we had the opportunity to play around with fava beans this last week. They're extraordinary: the pods are thick and fibrous, but when you finally break them open, they look as though they're lined with velvet. Each little bean is covered in a resilient, rubbery little coat, which you pry off with your fingers. Quite a learning experience.

Have you seen the magic that is Moomin? Tove Jansson has written and illustrated brilliant little stories about this little family (of moomins, natch), their friends, and their little adventures. They celebrate simplicity, silliness, and caring for one another, and have made me laugh more times than I can count. There are pearls of wisdom in there, too, but it never comes across as preachy. I've started out with the comic anthologies, and will most certainly be tracking down the little novels, too.
